Elevate Safety: Exploring the World of Mobile Fall Protection Systems

Fall protection plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of workers. Within the realm of fall protection, two distinct approaches are employed: fall restraint and fall arrest.

Fall restraint is a proactive measure designed to prevent falls from occurring in the first place. It involves implementing preventive measures such as guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall restraint systems. The primary objective is to restrict a worker's movement and prevent them from reaching a position where a fall hazard exists.

On the other hand, fall arrest comes into play after a fall has already occurred. It involves utilizing equipment and systems that can effectively arrest the fall and minimize the potential injury or damage. Fall arrest systems typically consist of anchors, anchorage points, connectors, and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as harnesses and lanyards. These components work together to ensure the worker's safety by stopping their fall and preventing them from striking lower levels or encountering other hazards.

Creating a Solid Foundation: Best Practices for Anchoring a Manufactured Home

Two factors must be taken into consideration when determining which anchor is best suited for your manufactured home: wind zones and soil conditions. Manufactured homes require proper anchoring for stability and safety, especially in locations where high winds are more common. The soil conditions surrounding the home determine which anchor is necessary to ensure this stability even further. Thus, built to comply with the requirements of one of the three wind zones and designed to be securely fastened based on one of the five soil classes within the designated wind zone, your manufactured house must be anchored according to its specified zone and class to adhere to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards as outlined by the HUD code.

Bright Future Ahead: JM Joins SkillsUSA in Developing Next Generation of Workers

For more than 160 years, people have been at the core of everything Johns Manville does. Recently that commitment took center stage in Georgia, where JM joined forces with the National Roofing Contractors Association to help foster the talents and passions of the next generation of skilled workers.

JM and NRCA teamed up at SkillsUSA's National Leadership & Skills Conference. Held annually in June in Atlanta, NLSC is a week-long celebration of the skilled trades and the accomplishments of career-ready leaders from across the United States, according to SkillsUSA.

The event each year draws more than 16,000 attendees, including students, instructors, industry partners and government officials. The highlight of the gathering is the NLSC, featuring more than 6,000 state champions competing for national gold, silver and bronze medals in 115 competitions.

ENRGY 3® HD Removes Limitations From Reroof of Nonprofit Serving Those with Limited Vision

Limited roof access didn't stand in the way of finding an affordable reroof for The Lighthouse of Houston, a nonprofit that has been serving those with limited vision for more than 80 years. Key to that was a long-standing relationship with Peak Roofing Inc., which worked with the nonprofit to create a cost-effective, 20-year roofing solution that did not alter the aesthetics of the building or disrupt the good work being done inside.

Also key was JM innovation — specifically its new ENRGY 3® HD cover board, which provides greater R value than a gypsum cover board but is lighter, and easier to manage and maneuver in tight spaces.

In addition to ENRGY 3® HD, the recover roof assembly includes 60 mil JM PVC SD Plus membrane.

Started in 2016 by Kirsten Fallon, Jon Lattin, and Janet Grazul, Let's Build “takes a proactive approach to addressing workforce shortages and increasing women participation in the AECM industry by introducing young girls to the opportunities available to them."

JM Helps Roof Construction, Sillman Architecture Deliver on Port of San Diego Project

A team charged with tackling a reroofing project at the Port of San Diego recently proved worth its salt, even as it dealt with the challenges posed by salt air and high-end cargo.

Chambers, Inc., dba Roof Construction, won the job to reroof National City Maritime Terminal Warehouse 24-B using a Johns Manville TPO system as the basis for design. And JM stepped in to help Sillman Architecture design a system that would meet the job's performance requirements, which included being able to withstand the high-moisture saltwater environment.

Other challenges included being careful not to let any debris fall onto the property, which is the site of a constantly rotating inventory of high-end vehicles.

JM Helps Committed Team Deliver Time-Sensitive Reroof at CAM St. Louis

The Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louisturned to a team of experts who designed and installed a reroofing project that delivered artful results on a tight timetable.

Known locally as CAM St. Louis, the museum is part of the city's popular Grand Center Arts District. Its 500,000 annual visitors are just shy of double the city's year-round population. Exhibits rotate annually from an off-site collection of more than 36,000 objects and display around 2,700 pieces. In 2021, the roof protecting these precious objects started to fail.

The design and implementation for reroofing the two-story, 16,135-square-foot museum posed challenges, including retaining aesthetic features while improving detailing, the addition of permanent rooftop safety equipment, and performing all work within a scheduled two-month shutdown of the museum.
