Pos-I-Tie® Anchoring Systems
The Original Pos-I-Tie® is a two-piece system for attaching brick and stone veneer to various existing backups. It simultaneously penetrates the exterior insulation, makes positive contact with the backup for transfer of lateral loads, and seals the hole in the insulation with an EPDM washer under the barrel head. Introduced in 1985, The Pos-I-Tie® was the first barrel screw in the industry and has been successfully anchoring veneers for 35 years.
Standard sizes for sheathing thicknesses of 5/8", 1", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3", 3-1/2", 4" and 4-1/2".
Custom lengths beyond 4-1/2" are available.
Pos-I-Tie® 3/16" diameter Wire Triangle Ties available standard in lengths of 3", 3-1/2", 4" and 5" in hot-dip galvanized and stainless steel. Custom wire tie lengths are available.
The Pos-I-Tie® ThermalClip® is designed for use with the Original Pos-I-Tie® Veneer Anchoring System. This new breakthrough in masonry construction adds thermal-break technology to all the advantages of the Original Pos-I-Tie® Veneer Anchoring System. It has passed NFPA 285 Testing as part of the CavityComplete® Wall system.
The clip snaps into the Pos-I-Tie® barrel loop creating a thermal break between the wire tie and the barrel. This break also allows for stainless wire ties to be used with the Zamak barrel screw.
Use #282-N Pintle Wire Ties with the ThermalClip®
Chuck Adapter for installation of the barrel screws. Use a drill with a depth sensitive nose piece or a variable clutch
adjustment. The barrel end of the Pos-I-Tie® is placed into the reusable chuck adapter.
For steel studs, drill the Pos-I-Tie® through the exterior insulation and into the metal stud. Use a drill with 1500 - 2000 RPM. Do not over-torque!
Sleeve Tool - Allows for drilling hole through up to 2-1/2" insulation and using the same sleeve tool for placement of the Chuck Adapter so you can use one drill for both operations. Pre-drill a 3/16" (4.76 mm) hole to a depth of 2" (51
mm). Slide the Sleeve tool over the drill bit and insert the CMU/Concrete Screw into the chuck adapter. Torque screw
into the pre-drilled hole.
The Chuck Adapter and Sleeve Tool are sold separately.

Moisture Control & Flashing Products
Cell vents are installed in the bottom vertical mortar joint of a brick veneer wall to allow moisture to vent out of a cavity wall. Cell vents are also installed at the top of the wall to allow ventilation in the cavity. They consist of many small adjacent passageways, which allow moisture to vent from the cavity to the exterior of the building while restricting ingress of insects. The cellular composition provides easy drainage for moisture along the full height of the head joint. Cell vents are UV-resistant and tested in conformance to ASTM D2240, D790B, D638 and D1238B.

Remedial Wall Tie provides a quick, effective and economical solution for securing and stabilizing masonry. Existing facades constructed of brick, stone, masonry, precast concrete, etc. that have wall ties missing or corroded, can be re-attached using Remedial Tie without removing the veneer. This stainless-steel helical tie is dry set. The Remedial Tie cuts a threaded groove into the masonry as it is driven into position through a pre-drilled pilot hole. The end result is a strong and permanent connection between wythes without the use of toxic adhesives or rigid mechanical connectors

Expert Advice
The Pos-I-Tie® was invented in 1985 and was the first barrel type veneer anchor in the marketplace. This system allows the transfer of lateral loads between the brick veneer and the backup directly through full sheets of sheathing without imparting any forces onto the sheathing. Not all sheathing is the same. It is important to analyze the wall configuration to determine the type and size of your masonry anchor to insure the correct Pos-I-Tie® is used for your project.
Solid Brick vs Brick Veneer
There are two ways to build a brick building: solid masonry and brick veneer. Is one better than the other? If so, why?
Solid Masonry
Solid masonry is the good old-fashioned brick construction that was quite common up until the mid-1900s. This is also known as ‘double brick,' ‘solid brick,' or ‘brick and block' construction. This form of masonry construction uses several layers (wythes) of brick with header bricks to hold them together. Some solid masonry walls built before 1900 were over 20" thick! Because the inner wythe can't be seen from the outside it was commonly substituted with concrete or cinder block. Sometimes metal ties were incorporated into solid masonry walls. Unfortunately, older solid walls with these ties didn't use hot-dip or stainless steel ties so most of those original ties have rusted away.
Solid masonry was undeniably a solid way to build. With an 8 inch or greater wall thickness, they were able to support a wide variety of different roof structures. Carpenters often worked together to build the floor joists into the walls at the same time the brick was going up.
In the United States, The TMS 402 building code allows for the use of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel and Type 300 Stainless Steel for anchors in exterior walls. How does one decide which material they should employ in their construction project? Both are high-quality materials and provide an impressive amount of corrosion resistance, but each has its own vulnerabilities and strengths and both should be considered when specifying building materials.
The first difference between the two materials is the way that they are manufactured. Stainless is an alloy steel, which means that it contains between 16 to 24 percent chromium, up to 35 percent nickel, and small amounts of carbon and manganese. To create stainless steel, ordinary steel, chromium, and the other elements are blended in their molten state. To create galvanized steel, ordinary steel is coated by dipping the products in melted molten zinc, hence the name “hot-dipped."
The Pos-I-Tie® is a 2-piece adjustable veneer anchor. The Pos-I-Tie system has been the premier anchor of choice for mason contractor's all over the country. Pos-I-Tie was the first barrel-screw masonry anchor back in 1985 and is still the first choice of architects and contractors. It is available in three different styles.
The 2016 version of the Masonry Building Code has been accepted as a part of the 2018 International Building Code. Earlier code modifications have taken place in 2013, 2011, 2008 and 2005 and the next version will not be out until 2022. Below are the current code requirements for masonry anchors. Please be aware that these are the “minimum" requirements for code compliance.
Key Features of the TMS402/602-16 Building Code
Backup walls must be designed to resist water penetration. Water entering the interior is one of the main causes of brick veneer failures. Water will get in the cavity so the proper design of keeping the water from entering the building by waterproofing the backup and getting it out of the air cavity is vital.
Flashing and weep holes must be designed to eliminate the water in the cavity. The code specifies minimum 3/16" i.d. weep tubes spaced less than 33 inches on center. (While this does drain water, it does not ventilate the cavity. In order to get good airflow to dry out the cavity, Heckmann's recommends using a vent-type weep system that is the full height of the brick manufactured from a polyester mesh or a cell-type polypropylene material and spaced no more than 24" apart. Vents should also be installed at the very top course of the wall to allow airflow through the entire cavity for drainage and drying.)
Excavations throughout Europe have found stone used for shelter as far back as 12,000 B.C. The Egyptians built the pyramids around 2550 BC and the Romans established a stone quarry around 173 BC. Today, stone remains one of the strongest and most durable building products on the planet. When using stone as a veneer, engineering and design are critical factors in a successful building project. The majority of stone projects are unique and require custom anchors.
For slab-type anchored veneer, the International Building Code specifies a minimum of four anchors per unit with tie spacing not exceeding 24 inches. The maximum area of a unit is limited to 20 square ft. Veneer ties for slab-type veneer are required to resist two times the weight of the anchored veneer in tension or compression. Wire stone anchors must be a minimum of 9 gauge diameter (.1483 inches). Non-wire stone anchors are to have a minimum width of 1".
The TMS402 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures list several references and guidelines for adhered veneer. Anchored dimensional stone is not currently covered under the code and is considered a “special system" that requires engineering.
