In this episode, Cherise is joined by Dave Hardister, Principal, and Andra Riegler, Project Manager/Architect from
Woodblock Architecture in Portland, Oregon. They discuss the
I&E Construction Headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon.
The newly renovated headquarters of I & E Construction is the product of a design-build and adaptive reuse project. What was once a nondescript nursing school from the 1970s has undergone a significant makeover, showcasing modern design and functionality.
Woodblock Architects focused on overhauling the building layout by repurposing a neglected courtyard and incorporating NLT, or nail-laminated timber, throughout the interior.

Project Name and Location: I&E Construction Headquarters Wilsonville, OR
This 27,000 SF adaptive reuse project consisted of a complete gut and remodel of a former nursing school
built in the 1970s as a new headquarters for a rapidly growing construction and development company.
The existing building was comprised of a V-shaped floor plan with two wings flanking an uninviting outdoor
courtyard.
This courtyard created an opportunity to capture building square footage to create a dynamic lobby as the
first impression for visitors.
A new 2-story volume was created within the footprint of the former courtyard. This 2-story mass linked the
existing wings with an atrium constructed with Nail Laminated Timber (or, NLT) panels and glu-lam beams.
The NLT roof structure informed the interior design including floating wood slat ceilings and wall treatment.
The program includes:
Offices
Conference Rooms
An expansive employee lounge
Fitness Space
Training Space
A small warehouse,
Mono-stringer stair; and
2-story graphics created with perforated metal panels on the Interstate 5 facing façade.
The extremely tight project schedule made for a perfect fit for the design/build project delivery method.
A quote from Cory Riedel of I & E Construction: “Woodblock’s creativity and innovation has resulted in a
workplace environment our staff and team celebrate and appreciate daily. We are very grateful and proud to
have had Woodblock and their design partners be such an integral part of the success and outcome of our
new home.
