The Nakamoto Zourin group is owned and managed by the Nakamoto family and headquartered in western Japan. We have managed sugi and hinoki forest in Hiroshima since the 1920's, and have four main mills in Hiroshima and Tokushima prefectures that mill siding and flooring from sugi, hinoki, pine, oak, cherry, cedar, spruce, larch, and other species. Nakamoto Zourin is the largest siding mill in Japan and the largest manufacturer of yakisugi in the world. We are affiliated with WoodOne, the largest flooring manufacturer in Japan and the largest radiata pine timberland owner in New Zealand. Additionally, in cooperation with Sumitomo Forestry we supply our off-grade logs to the biomass fuel market in Japan.
Nakamoto Forestry North America distributes jobsite-direct throughout North America from a stocking warehouse and prefinish shop in Portland, Oregon. Nakamoto Forestry Europe distributes throughout the European region from a stocking warehouse in Duesseldorf, Germany.
Nakamoto Zourin is PEFC certified, a chain of custody sustainable forestry compliance standard. Worldwide we mill and ship 650,000~810,000 square feet (60,000~75,000m2) of yakisugi every month, and have a surge capacity double these numbers. Yakisugi Siding
Traditional Tung Oil - Exterior
Tung oil transforms the unbrushed charred surface of our Suyaki® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” into a leathery texture that slows soot layer erosion, extends wood durability, and creates an even black color. This combination is suitable for exterior installations. Yakisugi heat treatment hardens and protects the siding against pests, moisture, and fire. While tung oil slows the weathering process, the siding will still develop its own a unique patina in response to the local climate over time.

Suyaki is an extremely delicate soot surface that easily blemishes. Bundles and planks must be handled and installed with extreme care. Please make sure that the installers have reviewed samples and are aware of the need for special handling before the lumber arrives at site.

Hinoki cypress wood (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a native species to Japan prized for its natural aromatics, rot-resistance, and blonde color. Nakamoto Forestry offers rough-sawn and dried moulder blanks ready for your local millwork shop. Ideal for saunas, interior paneling, ceilings, flooring, doors, and cabinetry.
Hinoki cypress wood (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is an aromatic and rot-resistant lumber species native to central and southern Japan. With an even blonde color and clear tight grain, hinoki has versatile uses in both interior and exterior applications, whether finished with oil or left uncoated.
The wood's straight grain, light color, and luxe planed sheen make it an ideal aesthetic material for wall, floor, and ceiling surfaces. At the same time, it demonstrates strength and flexion resistance against earthquakes, and has been utilized historically for pagoda and other sacred building structural timbers. Hinoki wood is revered for its aromatic compounds (including alpha-terpineol and limonene) which provide its incense-like fragrance while also serving as natural defenses against insects.
