Dumbwaiters
The flexible, cost-efficient choice
Dumbwaiters are usually the most efficient and cost-effective choice for a goods-and-materials lift. In sizes up to 39” deep x 39” wide x 48” high, with a capacity range between 100 and 750 lbs, dumbwaiters can stop at counter height for hand loading or floor level for carts and hand trucks.
You can trust our 133 years of experience and expertise to ensure your dumbwaiter will do what you need it to do - day in and day out.

Material Lifts
Work Horse Floor Loading Material Lifts
Material lifts are used, according to code, when the dimensions for a dumbwaiter (39”d x 39”w x 48”h) are exceeded. They are almost always floor-loading, and sizes are restricted to a maximum of 48” wide, with no depth restriction and a maximum of 90” high.

Cart Lifts
Specialized floor-loading material lifts
Cart lifts are material lifts designed specifically to transport stainless steel/metal, 4-wheeled carts or pallet jacks. Used frequently in hospitals, food service, laundry or retail, they are always floor loading and start at a width of 18” up to 36” with a depth starting from 24” up to 36”. Matot will custom engineer and manufacture any dimensions required.

Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRC)
The cost-effective solution for productive access to all levels
Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors transport goods to mezzanines, basements, balconies, or between floors of a multi-story building, and can also interface with material handling systems. All levels of a plant or warehouse can be utilized for increased production and storage with minimal of floor space required. Similar to material lifts, they are larger than dumbwaiters and almost always floor loading.
Matot Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs) follow the ASME B.20.1 Code, therefore there are far fewer restrictions for this product than material lifts and dumbwaiters as they do not pierce fire-rated floors. They are typically used in industrial settings, but do have some commercial applications.

Case Studies
Founded in 1965 by Ruth Fertel, the Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse family of restaurants is known for providing their guests with fresh food, good service and delicious steaks with the trademark Ruth’s Chris sizzle. The Indianapolis North location for Ruth’s Chris is located at 2727 E. 86th Street, and serves the northern Indianapolis area.
This restaurant was facing a few challenges. They needed a way to efficiently move food from the kitchen to the main dining area, but have a long staircase that made carrying trays of food between floors problematic. In addition, the restaurant shared a retail area with other businesses, so space was at a premium.
The VA hospital had dumbwaiters with automatic cart transfer systems installed in the early 80’s. With changed logistics and hospital needs, Matot proposed modernizing the units. One floor was eliminated while another floor above was added to meet new material flow needs. The cars and doors were replaced, and the motor and controllers were upgraded with new high-efficiency energy-saving equipment.
Size: 30” W x 30” D x 48” H; Capacity: 500 lbs.; Counter Loading; Serving 2 Floors
Benefits: Clean Room
Special Features: Hepa Filter System
This dumbwaiter was installed in a clean room and was used to bring uncoated micro chips from one processing floor to another. The uncoated micro chips are a very high value payload and are very susceptible to contamination from airborne particulates. The dumbwaiter unit was equipped with a Hepa Filters system that kept the dumbwaiter cab at a negative air pressure. The air was circulated from the cab through a ductwork behind and above and passed through a filter that screened out 99.99% of particles 0.3 micrometers in size.
Size: 22” W x 34” D x 48” H; Capacity: 300 lbs.; Counter Loading; Serving 2 Floors
Benefits: Convenience/Labor savings
The movie theater was in a mall and could be accessed by customers from the upper and lower floors. The dumbwaiter moved supplies from the lower floor storeroom to the concession are on the upper floor.
Size: 24” W x 24” D x 36” H; Capacity: 250 lbs.; Counter Loading; Serving 2 Floors
Benefits: Convenience/Labor savings
Special Features: Security
The dumbwaiter moved money from the main floor to the safe.
As part of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, the James is both a nationally ranked academic medical center and a freestanding cancer hospital. Situated on the campus of one of the nation’s largest public universities The James is the largest cancer hospital in the Midwest and the third largest in the nation.
